The tutoring program to help children catch up with school work
This program started in September 2024, when we realized that many of the children who we had helped enroll in school, were quickly struggling.  They were put into their age grade but as many had not attended any kind of pre-school before, and some who were not starting in grade 1, were completely lost at school.  They were ready  to give up.  Other kids teased them because they didn't know their numbers, letters or how to write or read.

So we hired a professionally trained primary teacher and assistant from Poncitlan, to come to San Pedro, three mornings a week.  (Most of the children then attend school in the afternoon after lunch.  Some have never attended school so we are trying to help them catch up.)

This was a difficult decision for us to make because of the cost, but we felt it was something that was essential to help these children. Around 25 children currently are receiving help from this program.

Because the children needed a quiet space to study, in 2025 we finished the area above the kitchen to provide a shaded area (away from the other children that come for food and activities in the main dining area).  We had not budgeted for this work, but we felt it was the best solution to creating a quiet space for this important program.

The children also need special school workbooks, paper, lined and math books, pencils, pens and coloring pencils.  And large packs of paper to copy some of the exercises on our printer.
