About this program for girls

Villa de las Niñas

Villa de las Niñas is a school started by Father Schwartz, an American Missionary priest in the 1960’s, and the Sisters of Mary in South Korea. This model school, located outside of Mexico City in the town of Chalco, became Villa de las Niñas in 1991.  Today there are schools in the Philippines, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Brazil and Tanzania.  The Villa in Chalco is a dormitory school of 3,500 young girls, spread over a campus of 35 hectares (86 acres) comprised of classrooms, dormitories, two gymnasiums, an Olympic-sized pool, basketball courts, football fields and other amenities.

The girls mostly come from at-risk, low-income villages and from disadvantaged families.  The applicants must show a desire for education.  Applicants must have completed primaria or primary school but not yet entered secundaria or secondary school.  An entrance exam is required to determine if applicants are adequately prepared for the demands of a first-rate education.

At the Villa:

  • All school expenses are covered (except the cost of transport to and from the school, twice a year).

  • The school provides firm guidelines and routines;  classes are demanding and study schedules are strict.

  • The girls sleep in dormitories and they interact with girls from all over Mexico.

  • They have caring nuns and teachers that guide and teach them.

  • They are given academic classes, vocational training, classes in cooking, baking, sewing, sports, art classes and cultural opportunities.

The girls become role models, planting seeds of hope in their villages.  Graduates of Villa de las Niñas, armed with education and skills, can return to work in their villages or work in Guadalajara or anywhere they choose.  Some previous graduates are now training to become nurses.  Others are working in IT.

How Poco a Poco is helping

Since 2024, we have been helping pay the transportation for girls to attend Villa de las Niñas.

Anita Torres has helped by explaining the details to the parents and girls, and helped them with the registration process.  Transportation is the only thing the families have to pay for.  But even that is beyond the reach of many of the families in and around the poor villages and towns of San Pedro Itzicán and Mezcala.

In 2024, Poco a Poco paid for 12 girls for their transportation for the year, so they could attend the school.

In September 2025, we paid for the transportation of 21 students and their parents (as the girls have to be signed in and out each time by a parent or guardian).  They returned home for Christmas and will return again in the summer for their summer break.

The cost of transportation for a year is 8,000 pesos per student (around $460 US or $620 CAN).  This is how much we have to pay for the large bus that transports the parent and student to and from the school twice a year.

How can you help?

Your gift will help us continue to pay for the transportation for these girls AND to add more girls to the program in September 2026.

  • You can either contribute towards the actual bus cost for the group of girls,

  • Or you can sponsor a specific girl to support -
    - for this year,
    - and for more years, if you wish.

If you decide to sponsor a specific girl, we would provide you with more information on their progress and grades as they progress.

These are the girls currently attending school and needing financial support.

In September 2026 we hope to add 15 more girls.
